Test Preparation
The right test can make a real difference to a student's study abroad journey. English language tests and academic entrance exams are often required for university admissions, scholarships, and visa applications. However, the best test is not the same for every student. It depends on the country, university, course level, subject area, application deadline, visa pathway, and the student's own strengths.
At Udwise, we help students understand which tests they may need, when to take them, and how to prepare strategically. Through our trusted partner network, we connect students with reputable and highly acclaimed test-preparation institutions for exams such as IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, SAT, GRE, GMAT, and other relevant tests. Where available, students may also be able to access preferential rates or discounted preparation packages through Udwise tie-ups.
Our goal is simple: to help students avoid confusion, choose the right test, prepare with the right support, and submit stronger applications.
Why Test Preparation Matters
A good test score can strengthen a university application, improve scholarship chances, meet visa requirements, and give students more confidence before they begin studying abroad. For many students, these tests are not only about English or academics. They are also about timing, strategy, practice, and understanding the format.
· Meeting university admission requirements for undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma, pathway, and professional programs.
· Meeting student visa or English language evidence requirements where applicable.
· Strengthening applications for competitive universities, scholarships, or selective programs.
· Improving academic confidence before entering an English-speaking classroom.
· Helping students plan retakes early if they need a higher score.
Some students may be strong academically but unfamiliar with computer-based exams. Others may speak English well but need help with academic writing, time management, or speaking under exam conditions. Proper preparation helps students understand the test structure, improve weak areas, and perform more consistently on test day.
IELTS Academic
TOEFL iBT
TOEFL iBT is another widely accepted English proficiency test, especially popular for students applying to universities in the USA. It is also accepted by many institutions in Australia, the UK, Germany, Canada, and other countries.
TOEFL focuses strongly on academic English. The test measures how well students can read, listen, speak, and write in a university-style environment. Many TOEFL questions are based on classroom situations, lectures, academic passages, and campus conversations.
This test may suit students who are comfortable with integrated tasks, such as listening to a lecture and then speaking or writing about it. Since TOEFL is computer-based, students should also be comfortable speaking into a microphone and typing responses.
IELTS Academic is one of the most commonly accepted English language tests for international university admissions. It is widely used for applications to universities in Australia, the UK, the USA, Germany, Canada, New Zealand, and many other countries.
The test assesses Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Students may choose between paper-based or computer-delivered formats depending on availability. IELTS is often preferred by students who are comfortable with a face-to-face speaking test and a more traditional exam format.
IELTS may be required for undergraduate, postgraduate, foundation, diploma, and professional programs. Some countries and universities may also require specific minimum scores in each section, not just an overall score.
The Duolingo English Test is accepted by some universities as proof of English proficiency. It is shorter and often more convenient than traditional English tests, but it is not accepted everywhere. Some universities accept it for admissions, while others may not accept it for visa purposes or for certain competitive programs.
Udwise helps students check whether Duolingo is suitable for their specific university, course, and country before they rely on it.
PTE Academic is a computer-based English test accepted by many universities and visa authorities, especially for Australia, the UK, New Zealand, and a growing number of institutions in the USA and Europe.
PTE tests speaking, writing, reading, and listening in a single computer-based session. It is known for quick results and AI-assisted scoring. Many students prefer PTE because of its structured format, faster score reporting, and frequent test dates.
PTE can be a strong option for students who are comfortable with computers, typing, and speaking into a microphone. It is especially popular among students applying to Australia, but students should still check whether their chosen university and visa category accept it.
Most students applying from Nepal to Australia, the UK, the USA, Germany, and other international destinations need to prove their English language ability. English proficiency tests usually assess four key skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The required score can vary by university, course, level, scholarship, and visa route.

SAT
ACT
The ACT is another undergraduate admissions test accepted by many US universities. Like the SAT, it is used to assess readiness for university-level study. Some students perform better on the ACT, while others are more suited to the SAT.
Udwise helps students compare the two options if a standardized undergraduate admissions test is needed.
The SAT is mainly used for undergraduate admissions, especially in the USA. It tests Reading and Writing, along with Math, and is designed to assess college-readiness skills.
Many US universities are test-optional, meaning students may not be required to submit SAT scores. However, a strong SAT score can still help in certain cases, especially for scholarships, competitive universities, or students who want to strengthen their academic profile.
The SAT may be useful for students applying after high school to bachelor's programs in the USA or other universities that accept SAT scores internationally.
The GMAT is usually associated with business and management programs, especially MBA and business-related master's degrees. It assesses skills such as quantitative reasoning, verbal reasoning, data interpretation, and problem-solving.
Some business schools accept either the GMAT or GRE, while others may waive test requirements depending on the applicant's academic background, professional experience, or profile strength. Udwise helps students understand whether the GMAT is necessary or beneficial for their target programs
The GRE is commonly used for postgraduate admissions, especially in the USA. It may be required for master's or PhD programs in fields such as engineering, science, economics, public policy, data science, psychology, and other academic or research-based subjects.
Many universities have made the GRE optional for some programs, but it may still be recommended or required by competitive departments. A strong GRE score can help demonstrate quantitative, verbal, and analytical ability, especially if the student's academic background needs additional support.
Some students may need admissions tests in addition to English language tests. These are more common for students applying to the USA, highly competitive universities, scholarships, or specific postgraduate programs.

German Language Tests
For students applying to Germany, language requirements depend heavily on the language of instruction.
For English-taught programs, students usually need to submit an English proficiency test such as IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, or another accepted English test. For German-taught programs, students may need to prove German language ability through tests such as TestDaF, DSH, Goethe-Zertifikat, or telc.
German universities can be very specific about accepted certificates and minimum levels, so students should check the exact requirement for each program before registering for a test.
